Mbappé's Contract Offer and the Largest in Sport's History

If you're a sports fan, you're most likely aware of the recent news about Kylian Mbappé's contract offer from Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal. If the offer goes through, the combined value of the transfer fee ($332 million) and his $776 million salary will be the highest in history. This got us thinking, what are some of the other biggest contracts in sports history? Join us as we explore and marvel at some of the most jaw-dropping deals in the world of sports and the impact they had.

Canelo Alvarez - The Mexican boxer signed a 5-year, $365 million contract with streaming service DAZN in 2018. This deal not only made him the highest-paid boxer at the time but also one of the highest-paid athletes in the world. With a guaranteed minimum of $35 million per fight, Alvarez made sure that he secured his financial future with this deal. Although, the two parties cancelled the deal in 2020 due to their disagreements about opponents and financial incentives, but Canelo still works with DAZN for many of his fights.

Bryce Harper - In 2019, the Philadelphia Phillies signed Harper to a 13-year, $330 million contract, making it one of the largest guaranteed deals in MLB history. Harper's exceptional skills as an outfielder and hitter made him a highly-sought after free agent, and the Phillies didn't hesitate to give him what he wanted. Time will tell if the deal pays off for both parties, but as of now, Harper is one of the highest-paid players in baseball.

Patrick Mahomes - The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback signed a 10-year, $450 million contract extension in 2020, the largest in NFL history. Mahomes has proven himself to be a superstar in the league, winning the Super Bowl MVP in 2020 and leading the Chiefs to the Super Bowl again in 2021. With this contract, the Chiefs made sure to lock in their franchise player for the long haul, and Mahomes secured his future with a deal that includes over $140 million in guaranteed money.

Lionel Messi - Following his two seasons with Paris Saint Germain, Messi recently played his first game for Inter Miami. After turning down (at the time) the largest contract offered in sports history, Messi will receive $60 million per season with Miami, along with an ownership stake in the club after his playing career, a share in Apple TV's deal with MLS, and Adidas profits. After Messi retires, this contract may prove to be one of (if not the most) lucrative deals in history.

Mike Trout - Trout signed a 12-year, $426.5 million contract extension with the Los Angeles Angels in 2019, making it the largest contract in MLB history at the time. Trout is widely regarded as one of the best players in baseball, and the Angels made sure to keep him on their team for the long haul. With this deal, Trout became the highest-paid athlete in North American sports history.

Jaylen Brown - The most recent addition to this list, Brown just signed a 5-year, $304 million supermax contract extension with the Boston Celtics. After a disappointing playoff run, Brown's name was engulfed in potential trade packages, but the Celtics elected to resign their star player. Brown has been essential to their success, as he was their leading scores in the 2022 NBA Finals. This contract will be the largest in NBA history, and represents a new era for the NBA, as players are recognizing their power more and more, for better or worse.

The world of sports is full of jaw-dropping contracts and deals, and the recent news about Mbappé's potential contract with Al Hilal only adds to the excitement. From boxers to baseball players to football and soccer stars, athletes have secured deals that guarantee their financial future and secure their place in sports history. The ever-increasing size of these contracts serves as a reminder of just how valuable these athletes are to their respective sports and the impact that they have on fans around the world. On the heels of Mbappé and Jaylen Brown, let's see what other mind-blowing contracts come our way in the future.

  • Can’t even imagine having a work contract in excess of $700m (what is that $2B+ Canadian-lol). Truly jaw dropping numbers. Hard to believe that everyone was outraged when Magic Johnson got a $25m contract for 25 years. Lucas great article. Loved the link to the ball signed by NBA legends Bill Russell and Larry Bird (plus others).
