The Greatest Comebacks in the History of Sports

One of the most thrilling things about sports is the unpredictability of it. We can see some of the greatest comebacks in sports when the tide turns and a team suddenly fights back and creates history. These moments of resilience and determination continue to inspire us long after the game has ended. They last in our memories as feats of perseverance that inspire us. In this blog post, we'll discuss some of the greatest comebacks in sports history that left an indelible mark on the collective memory of sports fans worldwide.

Liverpool vs. AC Milan (Champions League 2005)
The 2005 Champions League final has gone down in history as one of the greatest comebacks ever witnessed in football history. Liverpool was trailing AC Milan 3-0 at halftime before they started their fightback. Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard opened the scoring with a header, before a long shot from Vladimír Šmicer and a rebound goal from Xabi Alonso tied the game for Liverpool. They scored three goals within six minutes in the second half, an unprecedented flurry of scoring, and went on to win in the penalty shootout. This memorable game is now fondly referred to as the “Miracle of Istanbul” as Liverpool pulled off a miraculous comeback built on faith and determination.

Cleveland Cavaliers comeback (NBA Finals 2016)
The Cleveland Cavaliers against the Golden State Warriors was one of the defining moments in NBA history. The Cavaliers were down 3-1 against a Golden State team, led by Stephen Curry, that had the best regular season record of all time, and beat them in the previous NBA finals. Many thought this Finals would be the parade for the greatest team of all time, a coronation of legends. Lo and behold Lebron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers, who won 2 straight games to force a game 7. Behind LeBron James' 27 points and Kyrie Irving's shot making ability, the game was tied with 4:40 left in the 4th quarter. With less than 2 minutes to play and the score unchanged, the Warriors started a fast break, with Iguodala (seemingly) having an open layup, before LeBron James descended and blocked the shot. After a Kyrie Irving three, the Cavaliers won their first NBA championship, and completed the only 3-1 comeback in finals history.

Chicago Cubs vs Cleveland Indians (2016 World Series)
The 2016 World Series saw the Chicago Cubs come out victorious after a 108-year drought. The team was down 3-1 and made an impressive comeback to become the champions. After narrowly winning game 5, the Cubs posted a dominant performance in game 6, entering game 7 with a chance to end their 108 year championship doubt (the longest in North American sports history). At the top of the 10th the game was tied, and with Anthony Rizzo intentionally walked, runners were on first and second. Stepping up to the plate, Ben Zobrist hit an RBI double in what would prove to be the championship winning hit. The Cubs' resilience and determination endeared them to sports fans worldwide, in a sports series that echoed around the world, a testament to hard work and perseverance.

Patriots vs Falcons (Super Bowl 2017)
The 2017 Super Bowl has gone down in history as one of the greatest comebacks in American football. The Atlanta Falcons entered as narrow underdogs, but took a 21-3 lead ending the first half after scoring 3 consecutive touchdowns, and extended it to 28-3 midway through the third quarter. Tom Brady led the New England Patriots back, throwing a 75 yard touchdown and then a drive resulting in a field goal. With less than 10 minutes to play, the Patriots were down 28-12. After 4 minutes, the Patriots scored a touchdown after an Atlanta fumble to cut the deficit to 8. With a minute to go and the ball on the 1 yard line, the Patriots scored a touchdown and completed a 2 point conversion to tie the game. They scored 25 unanswered points to tie the game, before winning it in overtime behind a James White touchdown. Dating back to 1940, teams trailing by more than 17 points after 3 quarters in playoff games were 0-133, making this a historic comeback led by one of the game's greatest players, in one of the most exciting championships ever played.

Miracle on Ice (Winter Olympics 1980)
In the 1980 Winter Olympics, the USA men's hockey team achieved a legendary victory against the Soviet Union that impacted generations. The team was considered an underdog and was facing a dominant Soviet team. After trailing 3-2 entering the 3rd period, Mark Johnson tied the game at 3. After falling behind twice, the Americans had a chance to win the game with 8 minutes remaining. A few shifts later, team captain Mike Eruzione scored to give team USA their first lead. Barely managing to stop a frenzy of Soviet attacks, the Americans held on to win the game. The victory is now fondly remembered as the "Miracle on Ice," as the USA team pulled off an unforgettable win against a powerful adversary.
