- Known as one of the most vicious beatings in boxing history, the first round of the fight was a complete onslaught. Dempsey knocked Willard down seven times in that round alone. Willard somehow survived the round but was badly battered- his jaw was broken, he lost several teeth, and his face was swollen and bloody. He also suffered fractures to his cheekbone and ribs, and one eye was completely shut. The beating continued for three rounds, until Willard’s corner stopped the fight before the start of the fourth round.
- Jack Dempsey won by TKO and became the new World Heavyweight Champion, launching Dempsey’s legendary career and making him a national hero.
