- Lynyrd Skynrd is an American rock band formed in Jacksonville, Florida in 1964
- The original members included Ronnie Van Zant (vocals), Gary Rossington (guitar), Allen Collins (guitar), Larry Junstrom (bass) and Bob Burns (drums)
- The band replaced certain members over the years and reached peak fame in the 1970s with hits such as Sweet Home Alabama and Free Bird
- After having released 5 studio albums and one studio album, the bands career was abruptly halted in 1977 when their chartered airplane crashed
- Van Zant, Steve Gaines and backup singer Cassie Gaines were all killed, and the rest of the band was seriously injured
- The band reformed in 1987 for a reunion tour
- Lynyrd Skynrd were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006
