- This was Dempsey's 4th title defense. The fight would last the full 15 rounds with Dempsey winning by unanimous decision
- The boxing match in Shelby presented an opportunity for the city to become a thriving economic and tourist hub. To secure the fight, officials agreed to meet the significant demands of both fighters with local banks providing the necessary funds. The event ended in disaster for the town. The construction of a big arena for the event failed to attract a significant number of paying fans as well as the high ticket prices which proved to be a major deterrent. As a result 4 banks went bankrupt.
