- Alan Bartlett Shepard Jr. was an American astronaut, naval aviator, test pilot, and businessman. In 1961, he became the second person and the first American to travel into space and, in 1971, he became the fifth and oldest person to walk on the Moon at age 47
- Letter provided by NASA explaining the photo and the signature
- Photo was sent to an individual making a request of Commander Shepard, and NASA responded saying he was busy and sent this signed photo instead
- Back of photo has a typed description of Commander Shepard and the mission he was on from NASA
- Excellent condition; very minor corner creasing and cornerwear. Little to no other notable rips or tears
