- NHL alumni team featured superstars and Hall of Famers such as Bobby Orr, Gordie Howe, and Bobby Hull
- Orr missed the 1972 Summit Series due to injury and a Soviet refusal to delay the series to allow his participation, Howe had retired a year before and didn't return until 1973, and Hull was prevented from participation because he was currently playing in the WHA
- Game raised $130 000 for former NHL players in dire need of financial assistance
