- Born Frederick Stanley, Lord Stanley served as the sixth Canadian Governor General from 1888 to 1893
- Most famous for purchasing and becoming the namesake of perhaps the greatest trophy in sports, hockey's Stanley Cup
- Originally donated by Stanley as a challenge trophy for the best Canadian amateur hockey champion in 1892, because his sons had become avid hockey fans, the Stanley Cup is now the NHL's Championship trophy, and the greatest possible award in the sport
- Lord Stanley died in 1908 at 67 years old
