- Armstrong was an astronaut and aeronautical engineer who in 1969 became the first person to walk on the moon
- He joined the Nasa Astronaut Corps in the second group in 1962. His first space flight was as command pilot of Gemini in March 1966
- On July 20th, 1969 Armstrong and Apollo 11 Lunar Module Pilot Buzz Aldrin became the first two people to land on the moon. They spent two and a half hours outside of the Lunar Module Eagle and explored the surface. Astronaut Michael Collins remained in orbit inside the Apollo Command Module Columbia
- When Armstrong first stepped foot onto the lunar soil he famously remarked "That's one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind". The moon landing was broadcast live to an estimated 530 million viewers around the world
