- In 1972 Canada played the USSR in an 8 game ice hockey series. It was the first competition between the Soviet National team and Team Canada that included NHL players
- The series ultimately went the distance and all 8 games were required to determine the winner
- Henderson, somewhat unexpectedly, ended up playing a crucial role in the series and scored the game-winning goal in the final three games
- In game 8 Henderson scored with 34 seconds left in regulation to seal the victory for Canada. This goal become one of the most famous moments in hockey history
