- Bannister was an English neurologist and middle distance athlete who ran the first sub-4-minute mile
- In 1954, running four times 440 yards in 4 minutes was the dream of all the world's best runners
- On May 6th, 1954, at Oxford's Iffley Stadium, Bannister ran the mile in 3:59.40
- This feat was considered the 'Everest of athletics' in Britain, and Bannister had finally conquered it
- At the 1952 Olympics in Helsinki, Bannister set a British record in the 1500 metres
